My Journey
Forging a path toward the future of work.
I started my career in the field of international conflict resolution—and I loved it—but it was a very small field, so I ended up transitioning into doing work inside organizations, launching my consulting practice way back in 2001 (cleverly named Notter Consulting).
In 2007 I met Maddie Grant, which changed my life (in so many ways). It was the heyday of social media back then, and we started writing and speaking about the bigger implications of the social internet revolution, leading us to our first book, Humanize. We realized the point wasn’t social media—the point was that leadership and management were changing. Forever. The future of work was here.

The Consulting Brands
Culture That Works, WorkXO, Human Workplaces, and PROPEL
Maddie and I started our first company in 2014 (Culture That Works), realizing that culture was the key to unlocking the future of work. Over the next 10 years we did our consulting work under several brands, including WorkXO (where we created our culture assessment), Human Workplaces, and PROPEL. With each iteration, we continued to all sharpen our approach to designing and managing culture.
The Next Phase
From Notter Consulting to JamieNotter.com
In 2025, we came back full circle to brand the company around me. During this entire journey, the JamieNotter.com site was always there, either as a blog or as my speaker site. It now wraps the consulting, speaking, and thought leadership into one. Maddie is still co-owner of our company, focusing on back-of-house work, plus I have a team of other consultants I bring in to help with larger projects.
This new arrangement aligns our work to better serve our deeper purpose, which is to create a world in which everyone loves work.
